    Experimentally obtained dynamics of time-optimal, horizontal head rotations have previously been simulated by a sixth order, nonlinear model driven by rectangular control signals. Electromyography (EMG) recordings have spects which differ in detail from the theoretical rectangular pulsed control signal. Control signals for time-optimal as well as sub-optimal horizontal head rotations were obtained by means of an inverse modelling procedures. With experimentally measured dynamical data serving as the input, this procedure inverts the model to produce the neurological control signals driving muscles and plant. The relationships between these controller signals, and EMG records should contribute to the understanding of the neurological control of movements

    Artists are said to be like neuroscientists able to exploit the capacities of the brain to generate aesthetic experience (Zeki, 2001). Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) has been recognized as one of the greatest and most enigmatic masters of the 20th century painting. For his understanding of the eye movements, attentional shifts mechanism and the representation in his paintings of the complexity of the physiological process of vision perception, something that he famously referred to as "the transcription of the adventures of the optic nerve", he is considered a revolutionary painter. Our recent eye movements study on Bonnard's paintings evidences a "temporal-extended" mechanism in the control of scanpaths that refers to a progression of the scanpath pattern during repetitive viewings and supports the phenomenon of late emotional response which was one of the artist's artistic and perceptual objective

    Telerobotics: A simulation facility for university research

    An experimental telerobotics (TR) simulation suitable for studying human operator (H.O.) performance is described. Simple manipulator pick-and-place and tracking tasks allowed quantitative comparison of a number of calligraphic display viewing conditions. A number of control modes could be compared in this TR simulation, including displacement, rate and acceleratory control using position and force joysticks. A homeomorphic controller turned out to be no better than joysticks; the adaptive properties of the H.O. can apparently permit quite good control over a variety of controller configurations and control modes. Training by optimal control example seemed helpful in preliminary experiments. An introduced communication delay was found to produce decrease in performance. In considerable part, this difficulty could be compensated for by preview control information. That neurological control of normal human movement contains a data period of 0.2 second may relate to this robustness of H.O. control to delay.     Flame-made Ceria Nanoparticles

    Flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) has been used to synthesize high-surface-area ceria from cerium acetate in acetic acid solution. With the addition of an iso-octane/2-butanol mixture to that solution, homogeneous CeO2 nanoparticles were obtained. The specific surface area of the powders ranged from 240 to 101 m2/g by controlling the oxygen dispersion and liquid precursor flow rates through the flame. Furthermore, for production rates from 2 to 10 g/h a constant average primary particle size could be obtained at selected process parameters. The ceria showed high crystallinity and primary particles with a stepped surface. The powder exhibited good thermal stability and conserved up to 40% of its initial specific surface area when calcinated for 2 h at 900 °C. This shows the potential of FSP made ceria for high-temperature applications as in three-way catalysts or fuel cell

    Simultaneous deposition of Au nanoparticles during flame synthesis of TiO2 and SiO2

    Nanostructured gold/titania and gold/silica particles with up to 4 wt% Au were made by a single-step process in a spray flame reactor. Gold(III)-chloride hydrate and titania- or silica-based metalorganic precursors were mixed in a liquid fuel solution, keeping concentrations in the flame and overall combustion enthalpy constant. The powders were characterized by x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and ultraviolet-visible analysis. The titania or silica specific surface area and the crystalline structure of titania were not affected by the presence of gold in the flame. Furthermore the size of the gold deposits was independent of the metal oxide support (TiO2 or SiO2) and its specific surface area (100 and 320 m2/g, respectively). The gold nanoparticles were nonagglomerated, spherical, mostly single crystalline, and well dispersed on the metal oxide support. Depending on the Au weight fraction (1, 2, and 4 wt%) the Au nanoparticles' mass mean diameter was 3, 7, and 15 nm, respectively, on both titania and silica. The particles showed surface plasmon absorption bands in the ultraviolet-visible region, which is typical for nano-sized gold. This absorption band was red shifted in the case of the titania support, while no shift occurred with the silica suppor

    Soliton blue-shift in tapered photonic crystal fiber

    We show that solitons undergo a strong blue shift in fibers with a dispersion landscape that varies along the direction of propagation. The experiments are based on a small-core photonic crystal fiber, tapered to have a core diameter that varies continuously along its length, resulting in a zero-dispersion wavelength that moves from 731 nm to 640 nm over the transition. The central wavelength of a soliton translates over 400 nm towards shorter wavelength. This accompanied by strong emission of radiation into the UV and IR spectral region.     Detection of HI 21 cm-line absorption in the Warm Neutral Medium and in the Outer Arm of the Galaxy

    Using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, we have detected HI 21 cm-line absorption in the Warm Neutral Medium of the Galaxy toward the extragalactic source 3C147. This absorption, at an LSR velocity of -29+/-4 km/s with a full width at half maximum of 53+/-6 km/s, is associated with the Perseus Arm of the Galaxy. The observed optical depth is (1.9+/-0.2)*10**(-3). The estimated spin temperature of the gas is 3600+/-360 K. The volume density is 0.4 per cc assuming pressure equilibrium. Toward two other sources, 3C273 and 3C295, no wide HI 21 cm-line absorption was detected. The highest of the 3sigma lower limits on the spin temperature of the Warm Neutral Medium is 2600 K. In addition, we have also detected HI 21 cm-line absorption from high velocity clouds in the Outer Arm toward 3C147 and 3C380 at LSR velocities of -117.3, -124.5 and -113.7 km/s respectively. We find two distinct temperature components in the high velocity clouds with spin temperatures of greater than 1000 K and less than 200 K, respectively.Comment: 21 pages inclusive of 7 figures and 2 table

    51 Eri and GJ 3305: A 10-15 Myr old binary star system at 30 parsecs

    Following the suggestion of Zuckerman et al. (2001, ApJ, 562, L87), we consider the evidence that 51 Eri (spectral type F0) and GJ 3305 (M0), historically classified as unrelated main sequence stars in the solar neighborhood, are instead a wide physical binary system and members of the young beta Pic moving group (BPMG). The BPMG is the nearest (d < 50 pc) of several groups of young stars with ages around 10 Myr that are kinematically convergent with the Oph-Sco-Cen Association (OSCA), the nearest OB star association. Combining SAAO optical photometry, Hobby-Eberly Telescope high-resolution spectroscopy, Chandra X-ray data, and UCAC2 catalog kinematics, we confirm with high confidence that the system is indeed extremely young. GJ 3305 itself exhibits very strong magnetic activity but has rapidly depleted most of its lithium. The 51 Eri/GJ 3305 system is the westernmost known member of the OSCA, lying 110 pc from the main subgroups. The system is similar to the BPMG wide binary HD 172555/CD -64d1208 and the HD 104237 quintet, suggesting that dynamically fragile multiple systems can survive the turbulent environments of their natal giant molecular cloud complexes, while still being imparted high dispersion velocities. Nearby young systems such as these are excellent targets for evolved circumstellar disk and planetary studies, having stellar ages comparable to that of the late phases of planet formation.Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures.
